C.1 Silvicultural interventions in Cedrus stands
The activities of this action aim to create favorable ecological and growing conditions for the core tree species of habitat 9590* (C. brevifolia). The scope of this action will be achieved through the reduction (management) of the vegetation competition (i.e. trees of Pinus brutia and/or Quercus alnifolia) occurring inside habitat 9590*, as well as the reduction of competition between mature or younger C. brevifolia individuals. The implementation of the silvicultural interventions (i.e. pruning, thinning, removing) under this action will provide growing space, nutrients and water, for Cedrus brevifolia, within the targeted habitat 9590*. It involves the removal of the invasive tree Robinia pseudoacacia; felling and pruning of Pinus brutia and Quercus alnifolia competing or suppressing mature trees of Cedrus brevifolia; natural regeneration and thinning of dense C. brevifolia young stands, pure or mixed with P. brutia. The marking of trees to be removed or to be pruned will be in accordance with the Marking Rules produced in Action A.1.
C.2 Restoration and expansion of the habitat type 9590*
The restoration and expansion of the targeted habitat 9590* within the Natura 2000 site "Koilada Kedron-Kampos" are fundamental parameters for ensuring the viability of the targeted habitat. This action aims, through planting and sowing, to restore the Cedrus brevifolia stand density in problematic areas with low natural regeneration and other degraded bare gaps. Thus, the objective is to expand the targeted habitat's area as a result of establishing new regeneration groups in existing gaps and improve the connectivity between patches of geographically and genetically isolated Cedrus brevifolia stands. This action is essential for maintaining and strengthening the conservation status of the habitat type 9590* by restoring its structure and density and by halting gradual decrease in its area as a result of Pinus brutia expansion or cedar dieback. Planting and sowing methods and techniques will follow the reforestation guidelines that will be prepared by Action A.5.
C.3 Protection of the habitat type 9590* against forest fires
A random event such as a forest fire could have an irreversibly destructive impact on part of, or on the entire habitat 9590*. The aim of this action is to provide a series of prevention measures and pre-suppression measures to prevent or minimize the risk of a forest fire event within or near the project's site and to enable faster and more effective intervention of the fire-fighting forces. More specifically, this action includes measures, such as patrolling throughout the fire season; installation of information/warning signs; restriction of access; use of wild and domesticated animals for controlled grazing to reduce the ground flammable vegetation; creation of fire breaks and construction of water tanks. The fire production measures and the locations where these measures will be applied will be in accordance to the Elaboration of the Fire Protection Plan (Action A.2) and through the Action Plan for the implementation of concrete conservation actions (Action A.1).
C.4 Measures for improving the resilience of habitat type 9590*
The action focuses on the improvement of the habitat's resilience, targeting the control of the biotic threats of rats and bark beetles and the improvement of the abiotic environment with erosion control measures. The installation of artificial nests and bat boxes within the boundaries of habitat 9590* will attract barn owls and bats as biological means for the control of biotic threats. In addition, insect traps will be installed, and specific pheromones will be used for the management of the population size of bark beetles and insects. The erosion control measures consist of log erosion barriers made of stems of pine trees, check dams within the main streams of the habitat and construction of dry stone terraces. The measures to improve the targeted habitat's resilience will follow the outcomes and guidelines produced in Action A.3 and Action A.5.
C.5 Ex situ conservation of the targeted habitat type
The main aim of this action is to contribute to the long-term conservation (survival) of the targeted habitat 9590* and involves a set of conservation techniques outside its native habitat, alongside other in situ conservation measures. Ex situ conservation measures will provide suitable and adequate propagation material (seeds) for reforestation, in case the natural stands are seriously affected by a forest fire or a disease. Through these measures a new population at higher altitudes will be established, to strengthen the possibilities for the habitat's preservation in case of severe impacts due to climate change. The action consists of collecting seeds from natural stands, storing them in the Troodos seed bank, together with establishing and maintaining a new Cedrus brevifolia population outside its natural range, in Amiantos asbestos mine within the Troodos National Forest Park. This action will follow the guidelines described in the Action Plan for the implementation of concrete conservation actions (Action A.5).
